Vaughan's History

The ground that the City of Vaughan sits on has a long and interesting history. Many First Nations lived in the land, each with its own history, traditions, and customs. The City of Vaughan is situated on the Huron-Wendat and Haudenosaunee people’s traditional territory, which is part of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation’s Territory and Treaty 13 lands.

Vaughan was first settled by waves of Ontario’s early pre-Confederation immigrants. The majority of these settlers were British, but there were also many Irish and Scottish migrants. Many of the British settlers were drawn to Vaughan because of its agricultural potential, while the Irish and Scottish came to work in its mills and factories. Over time, Vaughan’s population has become increasingly diverse. Today, it is home to people from all over the world, including many different cultures and religions. This diversity is one of Vaughan’s greatest strengths.

Vaughan was officially incorporated as a city in 1991. Prior to this, it was an amalgamated town that consisted of the communities of Thornhill, Woodbridge, Kleinburg, and Maple. These four communities were brought together to form the City of Vaughan in 1971.

Since its incorporation, Vaughan has continued to grow and prosper. It is now one of the most vibrant and thriving cities in the Greater Toronto Area. Thanks to its diverse economy, excellent quality of life, and rich cultural attractions, Vaughan is an attractive destination for both businesses and families.
