Richmond Hill's History

Hugh and Ann Shaw, who arrived in 1798 and occupied lot 46 on the northeast corner of Yonge Street and Major Mackenzie Drive, were the first inhabitants to come to Richmond Hill and stay for more than a few years. Although the city was first settled in 1798, it wasn’t until the 1950s that Richmond Hill started to experience rapid growth. This was due in part to the construction of the Yonge Street subway line, which made transportation to and from Toronto much easier. Since then, Richmond Hill has become a bedroom community for many who work in Toronto but prefer to live outside of the city.

On June 18, 1872, the York County Council passed a bylaw incorporating the village of Richmond Hill, which became effective on January 1, 1873. The Ontario Municipal Board authorized its elevation to Town status in September 1956, with the new status taking effect on January 1, 1957. Since the 1990s, the population of Richmond Hill has increased dramatically. In 1971, Yonge Street in Richmond Hill was widened from two to four lanes, alleviating congestion on “Ontario’s worst stretch of roadway.” According to some estimates, this was a welcome side effect of the creation of Highway 404, which diverted passenger traffic from Yonge Street. The construction of 404 has also allowed for more commercial and industrial development in Richmond Hill.

Today, Richmond Hill is a thriving and vibrant community. It is home to many different ethnic groups and has a rich history. The town is also known for its beautiful parks, trails, and golf courses. Richmond Hill is a wonderful place to live and work with its convenient location and great amenities.
