History

The city of Peterborough, Ontario, was formerly known as “The Electric City” since it was the first in Canada to use electric streetlights.

It also underlines the historical and contemporary significance of technology and manufacturing as an industrial base for the city, which has operations from multinational corporations such as Siemens, Rolls-Royce Limited, General Electric, and local enterprises like Merit Precision Ltd., Dynacast, and Bryston. Pepsi’s headquarters were in a different building to the main facility, but it was still close by. Electricity was one of the reasons Quaker Oats moved to the city, and as part of PepsiCo, it is still an important feature in downtown Cincinnati. However, the number of significant industrial plants has decreased over time, and in 2018, General Electric closed its final manufacturing plant. As a result, employment has shifted to the service industries, while tourism is now the area’s most important industry.

In 1615, Samuel de Champlain traveled through the area, coming down from Lake Chemong and portaging down a trail approximated by present-day Chemong Road to the Otonabee River and staying for a brief time near the present-day site of Bridgenorth, just north of Peterborough. With the aid of the Ontario Downtown Renewal Programme, the Ontario Government sponsored the construction of Peterborough Square in the 1970s (ODRP). An Eaton store anchored the mall until the collapse of Eaton’s chain of stores in the late 1990s; it now houses offices, stores, and a food court. The provincial government relocated the central office of the Ministry of Natural Resources to 300 Water Street, a kitty corner from Peterborough Square. In 2008, a new regional hospital officially opened in Peterborough.
