Oakville's History

Oakville’s history began about 200 years ago. In 1793, Dundas Street was surveyed for a military road from Niagara to York (now Toronto). Dundas Street was eventually extended through Oakville as far as Hamilton. The region around the canals was purchased by the Crown in 1820. In 1827, the Crown auctioned off the 960 acres (3.9 km2) of land around the streams that the Mississaugas had given to the Crown. His son, Robert Kerr Chisholm, and brother-in-law, Merrick Thomas, were in charge of the area’s development. Chisholm also established a shipbuilding operation in Oakville Navy Street and Sixteen Mile Creek (Halton Region), which lasted until 1842, while shipbuilding in Oakville persisted until the late twentieth century.

In 1846, the population was 1,500. Schooners and the railway were used to transport vast amounts of wheat and lumber. Three churches, a grist mill, a sawmill, and a number of small businesses producing threshing machines, wagons, clocks, saddles, and metal goods were all present. There were also many types of tradespeople. Oakville was built around the many mills.

Oakville was incorporated as a town in 1857, and its major industries included lumber, shipbuilding, metal works, and the manufacture of furniture. In addition to manufacturing and industry, Oakville’s main sources of income are tourism and retail sales. Oakville’s growth in the 20th century mirrored that of Toronto, which is its neighbor to the east and Canada’s most populous city. The town became industrialized as the years went on. Today, Oakville is a vibrant and thriving town with a population of over 200,000 people.
