Niagara Fall's History

Prior to European arrival, the area around Niagara Falls was populated by Iroquoian-speaking Neutral people, but their numbers were drastically decreased after attacks by the Haudenosaunee and Seneca. The Haudenosaunee people stayed in the area until the late 17th century when Europeans first made contact.

Since the 17th century, there has been some European habitation in the Niagara Falls area. In the 1670s, a French priest and missionary named Louis Hennepin is credited with being the first European to explore the area. French colonists primarily settled in Lower Canada, particularly in Quebec and Montreal, beginning near the Atlantic.

The British Crown gave land concessions to Loyalists during and after the American Revolutionary War to enable them to relocate to Upper Canada and provide some recompense for their losses after the United States became independent.

Niagara Falls has a long and storied history, dating back to the early 1800s when it first became a popular destination for visitors from around the world. At that time, many thriving industries were based in Niagara Falls, including a large hydroelectric power station and several large steel manufacturing plants.

Today, Niagara Falls is known as one of Canada’s most beautiful natural wonders. It has become a popular tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors each year from every corner of the globe. The area around Niagara Falls is also home to many wonderful hiking trails, parks, and other outdoor attractions.
