Mississauga's History

Mississauga is located on the historic territory of the Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee, and Anishinaabeg peoples, including the Mississaugas, who have resided in the area for thousands of years.

Over 200 years before European settlement, Mississauga had its beginnings. Around the North Shore of Lake Huron in the early 1600s, French traders met Native peoples known as the Mississaugas. The Mississaugas were an Ojibwa tribe that migrated south in the early 1700s, settling in the Mississippi Valley. Etobicoke Creek, the Credit River, and Burlington Bay are all located in this area. “River of the North of Many Mouths” is how “Mississauga” is translated.

The Haudenosaunee, an Iroquoian confederacy, began to come into the area towards the end of the Woodland period, and by 1650, they had dispersed the Wyandot as part of long warfare known as the Beaver Wars. The Haudenosaunee, however, had abandoned their new villages on Lake Ontario’s north shore by 1687.

The Town of Mississauga and the villages of Port Credit and Streetsville, as well as portions of the townships of Toronto Gore and Trafalgar, were incorporated in 1968, and the City of Mississauga was incorporated in 1974. Mississauga is now the sixth-largest city in Canada.
