Markham's History
The first people to live in the area now known as Markham were the Huron-Wendat, who arrived in the region around 1000 CE. When William Berczy, a German artist, and developer, brought a group of sixty-four German families to North America, it was the first European colony in Markham. Due to urban growth from Toronto, Markham has rapidly transformed from an agrarian hamlet to an industrialized municipality since the 1970s. The village of Markham was first established by settlers in 1873 and was officially incorporated as a town in 1971. On July 1, 2012, it was officially recognized as a city by the Province of Ontario. The city has a rich history, which can be explored at the Markham Museum and Heritage Estates.
By 1830, a large number of Irish, Scottish, and English families had arrived in Upper Canada and settled in Markham. The township’s many rivers and streams soon supported water-powered saws and gristmills, and eventually wooden mills, in Markham’s early years, which merged the rigors of the frontier with the development of agriculture-based enterprises. Urbanization grew as a result of improved transit routes, such as the construction of Yonge Street in the 1800s, and the rising population brought industrialization and commercialization to Markham.
