Burlington's History
Burlington has a rich and fascinating history that dates back several centuries. For generations, the area’s original occupants, the First Nations people, thrived among the area’s abundant natural advantages. Sieur de La Salle, a French explorer, landed where LaSalle Park was situated in 1669. European residents began arriving along Burlington’s lovely lakefront in the late 1700s.
Burlington Bay is named after Bridlington, England, which John Graves Simcoe founded in 1792. Settled by Joseph Brant and his Mohawk tribe in 1784, the area was originally known as “The New Village.” Its name was officially changed to Burlington when it became part of Halton County, Ontario.
The Mississauga nation once existed between York, the provincial capital, and West Flamborough, a township in the municipality of West Flamborough. The western end of Lake Ontario was named “Burlington Bay” after the town of Bridlington in Yorkshire, England, by John Graves Simcoe, the first lieutenant-governor of Upper Canada, in 1792.
Following the Revolutionary War, immigration from the British Isles and Europe began to settle in Burlington, followed by United Empire Loyalists. Homesteaders arrived and cleared land for farming and living. Lumber was the area’s main export from 1820 to 1850, and wheat was afterward sent to Europe.
The Brant Inn, which was built by the lake in 1917 and became famous for exhibiting big-band singers during the 1940s and 1950s, was located in Burlington. Burlington was constituted as a city in 1974 when its population surpassed 100,000. The population had surpassed 160,000. Burlington’s population increased by 9 percent between 2001 and 2006, compared to Canada’s average growth rate of 5.4 percent.
