The Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation possessed 648,000 acres (262,000 ha) of land north of the Lake Purchase lands, stretching to the unceded area of the Chippewa of Lakes Huron and Simcoe, before the entrance of British immigrants and in the 1600s, European settlers began to arrive in the area.

Richard Bristol, a British soldier, surveyed Chinguacousy Township in 1819. In 1820, more English settlers began to arrive. Brampton was founded in the 1830s, immediately south of Chinguacousy Township.

In the mid-1960s, the province of Ontario began evaluating several municipalities. Peel County was experiencing rapid urbanization and growth. Its ten local governments had a wide range of capabilities. By consolidating them into three municipalities, each could more effectively respond to and plan for its inhabitants’ diverse needs. The provincial government established Caledon, Mississauga, and Brampton in 1974 to achieve this goal.
