Aurora is a town in the York Region of southern Ontario, located approximately 50 kilometers north of Toronto. It is part of the Greater Toronto Area and Golden Horseshoe. It is situated partially on the Oak Ridges Moraine and is located north of Richmond Hill. The town’s population was 62,057 in the 2021 census. Aurora's History
Aurora was founded in 1793 by Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe at the site of a portage route along the East Holland River that would avoid several miles of difficult rapids. The town became an important stop on the northern route to York during the War of 1812. Aurora was incorporated as a village in 1863, taking its name from the Roman goddess of the dawn. Aurora was the “biggest village in the county” in 1885, with multiple enterprises and mills, five churches, a schoolhouse with 210 students, and two weekly newspapers.
The following year, the population of Aurora grew to 1,000 people when local farmers were attracted by the prospect of grain being shipped down the Holland River to Lake Simcoe and thence to Georgian Bay. The arrival of the Toronto and York Radial Railway, connecting Aurora with Toronto’s city, helped spur further growth. By the time of World War I, Aurora’s population had reached 5,000 people.
Since then, Aurora has continued to grow and prosper. Today, it is a thriving community of around 62,000 residents that offers the best of both worlds – the amenities of a large city and the charm of a small town.
